INTEGRAL FORMATION OF THE HUMAN BEING: CONTRIBUTIONS OF EDUCATIONAL THOUGHT TO DISCUSS THE CHALLENGES OF THE CONTEMPORARY SCHOOL

The article aims to present and discuss some aspects about an existent idea in educational thought, in different historical contexts - education as integral formation of the human being. Thus, questions are raised about human formation, since education in Ancient Greece, highlighting, then, some theories considered relevant for current educational thinking. The research, of a qualitative nature, uses as methodology the literature review. The collected data have made possible to problematize education in different historical contexts, specifically about its function of integral formation of the human being. It was understood that social changes have produced different interpretations of human formation. Considering the fact that education has become institutionalized, this circumstances mean an increasing participation of the school in the process of human formation. Against the criticism of the school, it is pointed out the educational potential of this institution, which has given to the citizens free time for formation among equals.
