Abstract

Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory segmental and transmural dysfunction that can affect any portion of the gastrointestinal tract, ranging from the mouth to the anus, especially in the region of the terminal ileum. The exact mechanism by which microbial contamination contributes to Crohn's disease is not fully explained. Although several processes have been hinted as adjuncts. Thus, probiotic supplementation has been widely studied since they can demonstrate relevant functions under conditions of oxidative and inflammatory stress, from the reduction of the inflammatory mediators production because they are responsible for acting in cell signaling pathways and have the capacity to alter the pattern of expression of some genes. In this context, it is known that the intestinal microbiota is a potential therapeutic target for inflammatory diseases, among them CD, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of probiotics in the treatment of Crohn's disease through a literature review. The bibliographic research was carried out in 02 databases. The researched articles comprised 05 publications between the years 2010 and 2017. The studies demonstrate new possibilities of nutritional intervention that seek to decrease the inflammatory activity of CD with the use of probiotics in which they produce short chain fatty acids, alleviate lactose intolerance, control acute diarrhea, modulate the intestinal flora, immunity and improve the clinical activity of the disease and prevent recurrences of the disease.
