Utilização do óxido de etileno para esterilização de material médico – hospitalar

O óxido de etileno (ETO) foi introduzido no mercado como um agente
esterilizante eficaz devido a crescente necessidade de incorporar técnicas
com baixas temperaturas à rotina de esterilização de artigos
termossensíveis ou hidrossensíveis médico-hospitalares. O principal
efeito letal desse gás nos microrganismos é a sua ligação irreversível com
as bases nitrogenadas, impedindo a duplicação do material genético e,
conseqüentemente, a multiplicação celular. Além disso, o fato de ser um
esterilizante gasoso favorece a sua penetração, tornando-o ainda mais
eficiente. Entretanto, a manipulação do ETO requer alguns cuidados
especiais, por se tratar de um gás potencialmente carcinogênico,
teratogênico e extremamente tóxico. Dessa forma, este trabalho teve por
objetivo discutir as particularidades da manipulação do ETO, visando à
qualificação profissional e o estabelecimento de rigorosos procedimentos
de biossegurança, aprimorando execução do trabalho, minimizando-se os
riscos oferecidos. Assim, o ETO pode contribuir com segurança para o
controle da infecção hospitalar e assegurar a melhoria da assistência ao
paciente.
