A procura pelo atendimento odontológico pelo paciente portador de síndrome
de Down é uma realidade cada vez mais crescente. A ortodontia tem importante papel
na eliminação das características oclusais que contribuem para as limitações do
paciente. Fatores como mordida aberta anterior, atresia de palato, mordida cruzada
posterior e anterior, pseudomacroglossia, apinhamentos e giroversões, anodontias,
agenesias e microdontias são algumas das manifestações mais comuns na
maloclusão deste paciente, que em sua maioria possui padrão braquifacial e ainda
desenvolvimento mandibular no sentido anti-horário.
