Abstract

O aumento significativo da população idosa está associado com a alta prevalência de doenças crônicas e, consequentemente, com o surgimento de casos de polimedicação. E por apresentarem modificações fisiológicas, os idosos estão mais propensos a sofrerem interações medicamentosas e reações adversas pela quantidade de fármacos que lhe são prescritos. Por esta razão, esse trabalho tem como objetivo identificar, por meio de revisão bibliográfica, os fatores que propiciam a politerapia, os principais riscos que essa prática causa na saúde dos idosos e quais são as medidas que podem ser adotadas para evitar ou minimizar as reações aos medicamentos. Através deste estudo, concluiu-se que se faz necessário a implantação de estratégias visando prevenir e minimizar possíveis reações adversas que o paciente idoso possa apresentar com o uso inadequado dos medicamentos.
