A anemia falciforme é uma doença genética que evolui cronicamente
causando danos emocionais e físicos as pessoas acometidas. Depois que o programa de
triagem neonatal foi estabelecido como rotina, as triagens populacionais no período
neonatal tem sido muito importante para o diagnóstico precoce e a inclusão de medidas
preventivas e educativas. Através da triagem para o gene da hemoglobina S é possível
identificar portadores ou casais de risco, antes do casamento ou procriação, resultando
em muitos benefícios para os portadores desta patologia e seus familiares, além de
reduzir custos para o sistema único de saúde.
