The thyroid gland plays a key role in the balanced functioning of the body, and its dysfunction , may alter the production of thyroid hormones T3, T4 and calcitonin, bringing the individual to a hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. The consequence of those dysfunctions may cause important oral manifestations that can interfere with orthodontic planning and treatment such as maxillary or mandibular atresia, delayed dental eruption, condylar hypoplasia, enamel hypoplasia, taurodontia, root malformations and desorders in bone remodeling. The knowledge of this pathology in the evaluation of the patient is fundamental to reach the best result in treatment and to support the conducts to be taken for orthodontic planning. In order to investigate these hormonal alterations of the thyroid gland and its interference in the orthodontic treatment, this integrative review was carried out using the systematized search methodology in the databases Pubmed, Science Direct, Web of Science and Scopus. The research was limited by inclusion and exclusion criteria for the selection of the articles included, taking into account, the agreement with the proposed theme.
